Pc: Pride of Nations 2011 Full Game
PC gaming expert Jenn Cutter attempts to dominate and goes hands-on with Pride of Nations, an upcoming turn-based strategy game from a developer with a serious pedigree in the genre. Read on for her impressions.
What we're talking about: Pride of Nations, a turn-based strategy title from AEGOD/Paradox Interactive France. It’s set during the Colonial Era of the 19th century to its unraveling beginning the early 20th century.
Where we saw it: At last week’s Paradox Convention 2011 in New York.
What you need to know:
- You choose one of eight global powers to manage from 1850 to 1920. Grow your empire, seize colonies across the world, and gain prestige through economic and scientific growth. Prestige points are weighed relative to each power. Each nation has its own goals; Japan is unlikely to control as much of the world as Britain. Victory points become paramount should world tensions rise to the point that a great war breaks out. This throws prestige out the window, and you must dedicate all of your resources to managing your armies and fleets.
- A crisis can break out in any country at anytime, giving players a reason to remain invested and continue the game after a setback instead of rage-quit and restart.
- Pride of Nations offers several Battle Scenarios. These feature historical flashpoints and, handy for those wanting to wage war in a hurry, only require 2 hours or less to play.
- AGEOD has split the in-game economic model into state funds versus private capital. Since businesses are private enterprises, they are not restricted to lands you own. Setting up a business is as simple as dragging and dropping the building on any area with the required resources.
- Multiplayer games can now be resolved online using the simultaneous turn-based engine, or you can stick with the traditional play-by-e-mail setup.
Point in development cycle: Near final. It’s expected for the second quarter of 2011.
My take: At first glance, Pride of Nations is not the most accessible strategy game for those not familiar with AGEOD’s past titles or strategy gaming in general. The economic model is incredibly detailed, but thankfully, you can choose whether to micromanage it yourself or let the A.I. handle matters. Oh, and this is the first AGEOD game to feature a diplomacy model instead of centering entirely on warfare.
